Green tea has a long history of use, dating back to China approximately 5,000 years ago. India and Sri Lanka are the major producers of green tea. Green tea and green tea extracts, such as its component EGCG, have been used to prevent and treat a variety of cancers, including breast, stomach, and skin cancers. Green tea and green tea extracts have also been used for improving mental alertness, aiding in weight loss, lowering cholesterol levels, and protecting skin from sun damage. Research results on the health benefits have been mixed. Do not attempt to use green tea as the replacement for a doctor and medical treatment.
Of the four types of tea, black, white, oolong and green, black tea is by far, the most widely consumed. This is especially so because it is served as ice tea in restaurants and is widely available in tea bags in grocery markets. Black tea obtains its dark color because it is fully oxidized, leading it to be used for medicinal purposes by those seeking anti-oxidants.
Some popular black teas are Earl Grey, English Breakfast, English Afternoon tea, and blends of cinnamon, orange or lemon to create flavored black teas. These latter blends can sometimes be confused with herbal citrus-based teas. The difference between these flavored black teas and herbal teas is the caffeine content. Herbal teas contain no caffeine.
Black tea reached the Americas with the first European settlers in 1492. Black tea gained notoriety in the United States in 1773 when colonists tossed black tea into Boston Harbor during the Boston Tea Party. This symbolic gesture was an early event in the U.S. War of Independence against England.
White tea is made from young leaves and buds. It has many anti-oxidant, anti-collagenase and anti-inflammatory properties. University studies have shown white teas to be better health wise than green tea. However, green tea does have more fluoride than white tea. White tea has less caffeine than green tea and has a much more sweet and light flavor. If you’re new to tea and drinking mainly for the health benefits, this may be the tea for you.
Oolong tea was first produced in Fujian Province at the end of the Ming Dynasty. This was about 400 years ago. To receive the most from the rich flavor and aroma of oolong tea, many Chinese drink oolong tea from a tiny tea pot and tiny tea cup. Oolong tea is normally brewed very strong and leaves a bitter but sweet taste. It is a mildly oxidized tea, ranging somewhere between green and black teas.
